Finding the
Right Painting Contractor?
By John Sullivan
(as published in the Asheville Citizen-Times)
A too frequent complaint from homeowners
goes something like this, “I hired this painter because he came in with the
lowest bid. However, after I paid him he never finished the work and won’t
return my phone calls.” The old adage is often true that you get what
you pay for. How do you find a professional, dependable painting contractor
who will give you a fair price? [read

Interior painting.
Sometimes customers ask if we do interior painting because a fine
interior painter is more precise than other types of painters. We take
extra care to ensure that your property is well protected by covering expensive
cabinets and floors not to mention any furniture exposed to paint. Our
level of detail includes insuring that trim finishes are smooth and free from
drips or sags. This means filling any cracks and holes in walls and
ceilings as well as in trim before we apply primer.
Exterior painting.
Exterior painting, especially in the mountains, takes an experienced crew to be
done properly. Safety is paramount and in order to provide a quality
finish with low maintenance, crews must be well trained and professional.
Our crews will always apply a primer and two coats of finish paint to all
exteriors. Most painters only apply the finish coats especially when
dealing with cement-based siding such as Hardyboard. We find that these
very porous products require a primer even though they advertise that they are
pre-primed. We strongly recommend homeowners establish a maintenance
agreement with us or simply schedule a yearly inspection of the exterior finish
to head off any long-term damage. If we can catch a problem area early,
this can save homeowners thousands of dollars in the future.
Decorative and faux finishing.
Shiloh Painting brings years of experience to decorative,
faux and specialty finishes. We would be happy to work with you or your
designer in creating a one-of-a-kind finish for that special room.
Power washing.
Exterior
surfaces of existing homes generally require power-washing prior to exterior
painting. This process permits paint to properly adhere to the surface,
especially when repainting. Exterior decks should also be power-washed
generally every other year but in some cases, every year to remove mold, mildew,
and grim and restore that "like new" look. Homeowners should ask if
power-washing is appropriate for their project.
Deck staining. We recommend
that decks be stained at least every other year. We use only the finest
products to insure that your exterior decks are protected against weather and
insects.
Wallpaper removal. Have
you tried to remove old wallpaper because you read an article about how easy it
was? Well, now you know that what may be easy for some is pretty tough for
most of us. Let the professionals at Shiloh Paining remove your old, dated
wallpaper and replace it with new wall covering or interior paint. We'll
make your rooms sparkle!
